Tax Lists, Rutherford County from 1890

Transcribed by Donald Detwiler.

It is a well known fact among genealogists that the 1890 U.S. Federal Census schedules were destroyed in a fire in 1921. Therefore, those records are no longer available. For that reason, our volunteer, Donald Detwiler, took it upon himself to transcribe the 1890 Rutherford County property tax rolls. These transcriptions provide a listing of “heads of households” also known as the “tax payers.” At the very least, this gives us some idea of which families were residing in Rutherford County in 1890.

Taxpayers are listed semi-alphabetically by judicial district. There are also lists of “Colored Polls.” These were African-American men who didn’t own land, but did pay a tax, or “poll” in order to vote. For both the tax payers and colored polls, choose the appropriate district. For information regarding Rutherford County's Civil Districts see the 1878 D.G. Beers & Company Map.
