History of the Bank & Coin Buildings

Two buildings constructed in 1887 served as dry goods, clothing and furniture stores until they were purchased and remodeled as a bank in 1924. The third stories were removed in an elaborate remodel in 1959 and replaced with interior and exterior marble to modernize the building.

Offices for telegraphy and dentistry were constructed before 1887 and were joined sometime in the 1920s. Garage doors were added facing College Street, and the building became the Murfreesboro Battery Service Station, later the Sue & Willie Service Station and Restaurant. When the garage door openings were filled, it become known as the Coin Building, which was purchased with the Bank Building in the early 1980s by Rutherford County Government.
