Residential Building Permits

Where do you get a building permit?

It depends.

If the property is located in the unincorporated area of Rutherford County you will get your permit with us!

If the property is located inside the city limits of Murfreesboro, Smyrna, LaVergne/Nolensville, or Eagleville, please contact your respective building codes department for your building permit.

If you are unsure what the property's jurisdiction is, please use this map to find out. Search for an address, click on the property and a box of info will pop up, scroll until you see jurisdiction.

Who can get a building Permit?

  • A contractor who possess a valid State of TN contractor's license
  • A legal property owner who resides in the home and/or intends to live in the home once the project is complete
    • all property owners will be required to sign a homeowner affidavit when the permit is issued.
    • if you are a property owner who plans to build or remodel ('flip') a house for resale or lease, a licensed contractor will need to obtain the building permit(s).

When are permits issued?

  • Permits are issued during our normal business hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:15pm.
  • Once we receive all building permit documentation, please allow 24-48 hours for a permit to be complete.
  • We do try to issue utility permits and permits for smaller projects in less than 24 hours.
  • Walk-ins are welcome, however, we cannot guarantee that you will leave with a permit.
