Engineering Department

The Engineering Department provides engineering review services for the Rutherford County Regional Planning Commission, Building Codes, Highway Department and other County departments. The Department provides engineering counsel to other County departments and officials as requested. The Department reviews subdivision and site development plans submitted for approval by the planning commission for compliance with applicable regulations. An emphasis is placed on stormwater quality and quantity management provisions as well as adherence to articles of the FEMA Flood Insurance Program for compliance with approved plans. To ensure that acceptable construction is achieved, the Department administers an inspection and construction financial surety program with subdivision developers throughout acceptance of the subdivision development by the Highway Department and Planning Commission.

 Public Works

The Rutherford County Public Works Program was established in 2004 to alleviate flooding issues in Rutherford County. This program deals primarily with flooding issues involving drainage ponds and ditches. The program was active in the acquisition and demolition of 19 homes with severe flooding purchased under three FEMA grants. Projects are selected after evaluation by our project engineers. To have a flooding problem evaluated for correction by the Publics Works program, please contact Ben Friend at (615) 898-7732.
