Tornado Shelter – Procedures
When utilizing the tornado shelter, the following procedures and expectations must be followed. These align with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) guidelines and are in place to ensure everyone's safety:
1. After entering the tornado shelter it is recommended you remain in the shelter until the official “All Clear” is given.
2. Sign in upon arrival and sign out before leaving.
3. Follow all instructions given by the designated Tornado Shelter Supervisors.
4. No pets, including emotional support / comfort animals, are allowed inside the shelter. Service animals as defined under Tennessee and Federal Law are allowed; however, handlers must keep service animals under control (harness / leash).
5. No horseplay, running, or recreational play of any kind.
6. Parents/guardians must supervise children at all times.
7. Be respectful and courteous to the volunteer supervisors.
8. No firearms or weapons are allowed in the building pursuant to T.C.A. § 39-17-1359.
9. No alcohol or drugs on the property.
10. For safety and preservation of County equipment, we kindly ask that citizens not handle TVs, radios, or other items belonging to Rutherford County.
