Rutherford County asks citizens to weigh in on Middle Point Landfill expansion
Rutherford County – TN (03/03/2025) Rutherford County wants to know if its citizens are sick and tired of being the trash can for Middle Tennessee.
Middle Point Landfill, the largest landfill in Tennessee, accepts 1 to 1.3 million tons of trash a year. Approximately 70% of that trash comes from Nashville and other cities in Davidson County.
In April 2018, the Rutherford County Commission voted not to allow Middle Point Landfill expansion. Mayor Joe Carr vehemently opposes any consideration of Middle Point Landfill expansion. He's fulfilling a campaign promise he made three years ago.
"As I have previously stated, I am committed to representing the citizens of Rutherford County to the best of my ability. The request for Middle Point to continue to use Rutherford County as the trash can for the state of Tennessee is absurd. No amount of money is worth the health and well-being of our community; hence, I do not support allowing Middle Point to use the old Rutherford County landfill to bury trash in order to contaminate our water source for the next 50 years or so. We are saying no to 700,000 tons of outside trash brought into our county and buried annually," Carr said.
A survey is on HelpRutherford.org to gauge and communicate the community's views on landfill expansion. Citizens of Rutherford County are asked to go to the website and make their voices heard.
