Please comply with the following to renew a Tennessee license plate in person:
Please Note: You may not receive a license plate renewal notice from the Tennessee Department of Safety. You may remit your last year's license plate registration receipt in lieu of the state renewal notice. Verify the following information on the license plate renewal form or license plate registration receipt:
1. Serial Number (VIN)
2. License Plate Number
3. Make, Year and Model of Vehicle
4. Name
5. Address

Wheel Tax Notice
For the privilege of using the public roads and highways in this county, residents of Rutherford County must pay the county privilege or wheel tax, on each motor vehicle they might own. This tax is paid annually.
It is unlawful for a resident of Rutherford County to apply for or receive a title or registration from another county and drive our county's streets and roads.
Whenever a county resident, after applying for or receiving a title or registration, moves from the address named in such application or title or registration, or when the name of an applicant is changed for any reason, such person shall within thirty (30) days thereafter, notify the County Clerk of the change or changes.
VIOLATION OF THESE PROCEDURES IS A
CLASS C MISDEMEANOR AND IS
PUNISHABLE BY LAW
License Plate Renewals Fees
An additional $5.40 process and handling fee must be included when mailing out a new license plate.
An additional $2.00 process and handling fee must be included when mailing out renewals receiving decals, and/or registrations, i.e. transfers.
Commercial License Plates (H-1) - $131.50
Commercial License Plates (H-2) - $183.25
Farm/Joint License Plates (J-2) - $114.05
Farm/Joint License Plates (J-3) - $186.65
Military License Plates - $33.00 Active Duty Only.
Must remit copy of current active duty orders and current LES which reflects TN as home of record to be exempt from wheel tax
(Limit of one wheel tax exemption per military member.)
Motorcycle License Plates - $49.50
Personalized License Plates - $121.50
Regular License Plates - $85.50
Specialty License Plates - $121.50

Out of state checks not accepted, unless drawn off a locally affiliated bank
Name and address must be pre-printed on check
Home and work telephone numbers must be pre-printed or written on check

Disabled License Plate and/or Placard
Eligibility
Disabled drivers may apply for Disabled Person License Plates or disabled person permanent placards.
To obtain a Disabled Person License Plate, the disabled person must be the titled owner of vehicle.
Disabled passengers may apply for placards but not plates. Disabled passenger does not have to be a titled owner of vehicle to obtain a placard.
Persons eligible for a Disabled License Plate and/or Placard:
Person or passenger confined to a wheelchair.
Person or passenger able to walk only with difficulty or uncertainty
Person or passenger with vision of not more than 20/200 with corrective lenses.
Placards are personal to the disabled driver or passenger and may be used on any vehicle in which they are riding/driving.
Anyone who is disabled and files an Application for Disabled Person License Plate and/or Placard in the Office of the Rutherford County Clerk may purchase a Disabled Person Placard.
Temporary disabled person placards are also available for those with a temporary handicapping condition for the estimated duration of the condition, up to a maximum of six months. The temporary placard may be re-issued one time only.

Permanent Placard Renewal - $3.00 (Renewed every two years - Free if permanently confined to a wheelchair.)
