Rutherford County Solid Waste welcomes you to utilize the new Rutherford County Solid Waste Transfer Station located at 6025 Landfill Road, Murfreesboro, TN 37130!

Station hours: 4:00AM Until 4:00PM Monday-Friday, Saturday 6:00AM Until 12:00PM

Non-Commercial and residential customers are welcome to utilize this station. We ask that you come between 6:00 AM and 2:00PM Monday-Friday to avoid delays for commercial traffic. Hard hats and hi-visibility clothing are required for all people inside of the transfer station. Please bring them with you.

Non-Commercial and commercial customers without accounts set up with Rutherford County will be charged the Cash Customer Gate Rate (Currently $95.00/Ton). If you are a commercial waste handler and anticipate utilizing the station frequently, we strongly encourage you apply for an account with Rutherford County. Account holders receive benefits of reduced fees based on delivered tonnage. Credit will never be extended to anyone not on account with Rutherford County. No exceptions.

No manifested loads will be accepted at this transfer station. If you have a special waste permit, your materials must be managed elsewhere please. A complete list of the unacceptable materials and station rules can be found below.

The present fee schedule based on monthly tons (1st of calendar month until last day of calendar month) is as follows: 0-199 Tons $95.00/ton 200-1,999 Tons $85.00/Ton 2,000-4,999 Tons $80.00/Ton 5,000-7,999 Tons $77.50/Ton 8,000+ Tons $75.00/Ton

All commercial customers must have an active account with Rutherford County to receive reduced billing rates. To set up an account, a completed and signed Credit Application is required.

To apply, download and complete the Credit Application by clicking the link below or scanning the QR code to download a fillable Credit Application. Once filled out and signed, email the application to Carla Hill at [email protected]. Please use the subject line: 'Transfer Station Credit Application - [Your Company Name]' when submitting your application." Applications will be reviewed in the order received. Please allow 7-10 business days for application processing. Once approved, your account will be activated, and monthly billing will begin. A representative from Rutherford County Solid Waste will notify you via email once your account has been approved and set up.

Credit will not be extended to anyone who is not on account with Rutherford County—no exceptions.

Why Do We Need a Transfer Station?

Construction Project

The construction project is divided into four phases: Phase One and Two - Site and Structural Development

The work site is prepared for the construction of actual structures. The winner of the RFP, Moody Construction, is poised to be ready on time with the deliverable to get ready for the second phase which will be the structural component. The structural component is where the utility connections for the buildings are established, concrete is poured, and the buildings are built. Boyce Ballard of Murfreesboro has been selected as the contractor for the second phase of the project; the construction of the transfer station, scale house, and office building. The two other parts of the project to be bid out are connections that connect the new Rutherford County Solid Waste Transfer Station to the City of Murfreesboro’s water and sewer utilities. The City of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County have come to an agreement where Murfreesboro will allow the Transfer Station to connect to these utilities as an out-of-city customer. The utilities connection project will be the next phase of construction that will solicit requests for proposal. The fourth and final component of the project is modifying the entranceway on Landfill Road and increasing infrastructure, which will improve the road quality for heavier equipment, heavy-duty trucks, and waste equipment to come in and out of the transfer station in the safest way possible. Estimated time frame of completion is the end of the first annual quarter of 2025, on pace to be done around March or April. This projected date is contingent on weather and contractor performance.

What Items are Accepted at the Transfer Station?

The site is permitted as a Class I disposal facility. Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), often referred to as common household waste as well as commercial wastes are accepted at the site with proper approval. When unaccepted waste is present and identified, it is either placed back in the truck and returned to the customer or placed in a container for a direct haul to an approving landfill at the transporters’ cost.

Wastes that are not accepted: Drums, Tires, Concrete Slabs, Asbestos, Batteries, Hazardous Waste, Sludge/Liquids, Special Wastes, Oversized materials

The current process for identifying waste is a physical inspection of the load via the camera system as well as a verbal confirmation from the driver. At times, personnel may shut down the tipping floor to inspect a load. Signage is posted around the facility indicating this information to customers.

Who Can Use the Transfer Station?

Rutherford County Transfer Station (RCTS) is open for the disposal of wastes generated within Rutherford County. All waste managed at the RCTS has a tipping fee associated with it. Private and public generators of large amounts of residential solid waste, commercial solid waste or construction and demolition debris are welcome to utilize the facility provided they pay the tipping fee. Fees are determined based on the FEE SCHEDULE which is calculated based on monthly tons.

As always, Rutherford County residentially generated waste is collected free of charge at our 14 County Convenience Centers. Please be prepared to provide proof of residency to ensure this benefit is offered only to Rutherford County residents.

Will the Transfer Station Stink?

When dealing with solid waste, there is no guarantee of zero odor, however, the transfer station will be enclosed, and odor will be contained to the inside of the building. The transfer station is designed to be financially self-supporting with no property tax dollars associated with the operation of the facility. The goal is to maintain financial feasibility and sustainability that matches the pace of growth in Rutherford County. Additionally, this will be an economic boost to the community as there will be an opportunity for small commercial hauler growth.
